Photo postcard of Crook, CO, high school, ca. 1920.

I think this is one of the most unusual-looking school buildings I’ve seen.  Note the water well hand pump to the left of the building.

Crook, which is in Logan County, sits in the northeast corner of the state.  If you were to take I-76 East from Crook, driving past Sedgwick, Ovid and Julesburg, in 66 miles you would reach Ogallala, Nebraska.    In 2021, about 113 people lived in Crook.

Crook is named for General George Crook, officer during the Civil War and the Indian Wars.

Thank you for sharing this picture of the school. I began kindergarten there in 1964. The school housed grades kindergarten- 12th Grade. There was a long tube/fire escape attached to the school. Kids on the 2nd and 3rd floor would climb out their classroom window onto it and slide to safety.

      Dear Cindy,

I am so tickled to get your response. You help bring the place to life. I had no idea the school housed K thru 12. I’ve always considered it one of the most uniquely designed schools I’ve ever seen. And as long as there wasn’t a fire, the drills must have been an adventure in that tube fire escape! I grew up in Fort Lupton and must confess I had not heard of Crook until I came across the two photos for my blog back in 2021 or thereabouts.

Thank you so much for your comments!
