Photo postcard of Johnstown man on dray, 1909.

Johnstown sits just east of I-25, about 10 miles east of Loveland, as the crow flies, and about 12 miles southwest of Greeley, again on the crow’s back.   It covers territory falling in both Larimer and Weld Counties.

“Howard,” the author of this postcard mailed February 17, 1909, is the man seated on what he refers to as his dray, which Webster’s Dictionary defines as “a strong cart or wagon without sides.”   He writes to Harry Swinburne in Delhi, Iowa:  “Dear Friends, I have been trying to get a picture of my dray when it was loaded, but every one failed to be good.  I got out of my sick bed and climbed upon the seat to have this taken the day before I gave possession.  The man behind me is the one I sold to.”

I am struck by how high the driver’s seat is.   I assume it’s set high like that to accommodate maximum loads.
